Hello Year 5, from your Year 6 teacher

Hello Year 5!

I hope you all read the newsletter, put on the website on Friday, which told you where the teachers will be next year and so it is no surprise that I, Mrs Legg, am blogging you today.  I’m really looking forward to moving into Year 6 with you.  Year 6 is a very exciting year.  As the oldest children in the school, you will be expected to set an example in your behaviour and your learning and you will be taking responsibility for various things around the school.  As it is your last year in primary school, we will be working very hard to make sure that you are secure in everything you have learnt at All Souls so that you are ready for secondary school.  We’ll be working hard but I hope we’ll have fun together, too – I’m particularly looking forward to doing the end of year show with you.

We’ll have more opportunities to get to know each other in September but there are two things I would like you to do today.  Firstly, I would like you to write a comment in the blog to introduce yourself.  Tell me what you think your greatest strength at school is and tell me what you are most worried about in Year 6.  I won’t publish these comments, so no-one else will see them, but I will read them myself.

Secondly, I have a Literacy activity for you to do.  I love reading and next year we are going to enjoy lots of different books together.  I would like to know what you enjoy reading and why you enjoy reading it.  Your Literacy activity for today, then, is this:

Write a book review about either your favourite book OR a book you have read recently.

You must include:

  • The title and author of the book
  • A summary of the plot – tell me the main things that happen in the story. If you choose to write about a non-fiction book, then tell some of the key pieces of information in it.
  • Why did you enjoy the book?
  • Who would you recommend this book to?
  • An illustration from the book. You can find one online, include a photo, or draw your own illustration.

You can do your book review as a blog post or email it to photos@allsoulsprimary.co.uk so that I can see it.

Remember: this is the first time I will see your writing, so make sure it shows you at your best.

Here’s an example where I share a bit about a book I have read recently: book review example

For the rest of the day, follow the home learning activities from Mr Roman.  He has asked me to tell you that your Maths activity is in Week 6 of your packs and it is Understanding Percentages.

Have a great day, everyone.  I’m looking forward to reading your comments and blog posts.

Love from Mrs Legg
